چکیده

I n this paper I introduce some new developments in the study of lung vascular injury and revisit some older approaches that need a fresh look. Lung vascular injury is becoming more and more fascinating as findings and techniques in other fields are adapted to lung vessels. Most topics of the Aspen Conference related to lung vascular injury; I tried to avoid duplication and concentrated on a few interesting areas.

Endothelial Cdc42 deficiency impairs endothelial regeneration and vascular repair after inflammatory vascular injury

BACKGROUND Endothelial cell (EC) regeneration is essential for inflammation resolution and vascular integrity recovery after inflammatory vascular injury. Cdc42 is a central regulator of cell survival and vessel formation in EC development. However, it is unknown that whether Cdc42 could be a regulating role of EC repair following the inflammatory injury in the lung. The study sought to test th...

The role of vascular growth factors in hyperoxia-induced injury to the developing lung.

Normal pulmonary vascular development is the result of a complex interplay of growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the angiopoietins. Injury to the developing lung, whether due to hyperoxia or mechanical ventilation, results in disordered vascular development, ranging from an apparent arrest of microvascular development in milder injury to extensive microvascu...

Imatinib attenuates inflammation and vascular leak in a clinically relevant two-hit model of acute lung injury.

Acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS), an illness characterized by life-threatening vascular leak, is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Recent preclinical studies and clinical observations have suggested a potential role for the chemotherapeutic agent imatinib in restoring vascular integrity. Our prior work demonstrates differe...

E. coli pneumonia induces CD18-independent airway neutrophil migration in the absence of increased lung vascular permeability.

We examined the relationship between neutrophil [polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN)] influx and lung vascular injury in response to Escherichia coli pneumonia. We assessed lung tissue PMN uptake by measuring myeloperoxidase and transvascular PMN migration by determining PMN counts in lung interstitium and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in mice challenged intratracheally with E. coli. Lung v...

Vascular endothelial growth factor in acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most severe form of lung injury, characterised by alveolar oedema and vascular permeability, in part due to disruption of the alveolar capillary membrane integrity. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was originally identified as a vascular permeability factor and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury/ARDS. This revi...
